First Energy has been instrumental in the development of the concept of “Sooriya Shakthi”, a community level solar project that utilizes the medium voltage network in rural areas of Sri Lanka.
Sooriya Shakthi program
The concept evolves around the medium voltage 33 kV distribution network that covers all the cities and villages in Sri Lanka. There is a massive benefit of injecting power at the end of the line that would take excess energy in villages to sub-urban industrial loads close to the grid substations.
- This concept was adopted by CEB and was included in “Gamata Balagarayak” in national budget 2022.
- Underutilized rural distribution network will be generating excess energy during the day and will reverse feed the line towards the grid substation.
- CEB has selected 7,000 rural transformers for the initial project.
- This can be extended to larger projects up to 1 MW, along the 33kV medium voltage line by introducing additional transformers.
